Installation guide

Getting Scrybapp up and running takes about 30 seconds. Here is the step-by-step process from download to your first transcription.

1

Download the DMG file

Click the download button above to get the Scrybapp installer. The file is a standard macOS disk image (DMG) that is approximately 150 MB. The download contains everything you need, including the Whisper AI models, so there are no additional downloads required after installation.

2

Open the DMG and drag to Applications

Double-click the downloaded DMG file to mount it. You will see the Scrybapp icon and an Applications folder shortcut. Drag the Scrybapp icon onto the Applications folder to install it. This copies the application to your Mac. You can then eject the DMG and delete the downloaded file if you wish.

3

Launch Scrybapp

Open Scrybapp from your Applications folder or Spotlight (press Command + Space, type "Scrybapp", and press Enter). On first launch, macOS may show a security prompt because the app was downloaded from the internet. Click "Open" to proceed. Scrybapp is notarized by Apple, confirming it has been scanned for malware.

4

Grant microphone access

Scrybapp will request permission to access your microphone. This is required for speech-to-text functionality. Click "Allow" in the macOS permission dialog. Scrybapp also requests Accessibility access so it can type text into your active application. Both permissions can be managed later in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

5

Start transcribing

You are ready to go. Press Option (⌥) + Space to activate Scrybapp, speak naturally, and watch your words appear as text in whatever application you are using. The default keyboard shortcut can be customized in the app settings. Your 3-minute free trial begins with your first transcription.

Quick start: speak and type in 3 steps

Scrybapp is designed to be invisible. It sits quietly in your menu bar until you need it, then gets out of the way.

1. Press the shortcut

Hit Option + Space (customizable) from any application on your Mac. Scrybapp activates instantly with a subtle visual indicator so you know it is listening. No need to switch windows or open an app. It works system-wide in every application: your browser, email client, text editor, Slack, Notion, Google Docs, and any other app that accepts text input.

2. Speak naturally

Talk the way you normally would. Scrybapp understands natural speech patterns, handles punctuation intelligently, and works with over 100 languages. You do not need to speak slowly, use special commands, or articulate unnaturally. The Whisper AI model was trained on hundreds of thousands of hours of real speech, so it handles accents, filler words, and natural pauses with ease.

3. Done

Release the shortcut key (or press it again) and your transcribed text appears in your active application. That is it. No copy-pasting from a separate window, no switching apps, no reviewing and confirming. The text is typed directly where your cursor is, as if you had typed it on your keyboard. Scrybapp fades back into the background, ready for your next dictation.

Installation FAQ

Is the download safe?

Yes. Scrybapp is notarized by Apple, which means Apple has scanned the application for malware and confirmed it meets their security standards. When macOS shows a security prompt on first launch, click "Open" to proceed safely. You can verify the notarization yourself in Finder by right-clicking the app and selecting "Get Info."

Why does Scrybapp need microphone access?

Scrybapp needs microphone access to capture your speech for transcription. This is a standard macOS permission that you grant once. Your audio is processed entirely locally by the Whisper AI model and never sent anywhere. You can revoke microphone access at any time in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Why does Scrybapp need Accessibility access?

Accessibility access allows Scrybapp to type transcribed text directly into your active application, regardless of which app you are using. Without this permission, Scrybapp could transcribe your speech but would not be able to insert the text into other apps. This is the same permission mechanism used by text expanders and keyboard macro tools.

Can I change the keyboard shortcut?

Yes. The default shortcut is Option (⌥) + Space, but you can customize it to any key combination you prefer in Scrybapp's settings. Many users choose a function key, a modifier combination they don't use elsewhere, or a dedicated macro key if they have a programmable keyboard.

How much disk space does Scrybapp use?

The Scrybapp application including all Whisper AI models is approximately 150 MB. This is a one-time storage requirement. Unlike cloud-based alternatives, Scrybapp does not accumulate cache files, audio recordings, or transcription logs over time. The storage footprint remains constant regardless of how much you use the application.

Does Scrybapp work with external microphones?

Yes. Scrybapp works with any microphone your Mac can detect, including built-in microphones, USB microphones, Bluetooth headsets, AirPods, and professional audio interfaces. You can select your preferred microphone in the app settings or use your Mac's default audio input device.

Can I use Scrybapp on multiple Macs?

The free trial works on any Mac independently. If you purchase a lifetime license, you can activate it on up to 3 Macs. Each Mac gets its own activation, and you can deactivate a device to free up a slot if you replace your Mac.

What if macOS blocks the app from opening?

If macOS shows a message that the app cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and scroll down to find a message about Scrybapp being blocked. Click "Open Anyway." This only happens once. Scrybapp is notarized by Apple and is completely safe to use.

The best speech-to-text experience on macOS

If you have been searching for a way to download speech-to-text software for your Mac, you have probably encountered a frustrating landscape. Most voice typing tools for macOS fall into two categories: cloud-based services that require subscriptions, accounts, and internet connectivity, or basic built-in dictation that lacks accuracy and features. Scrybapp represents a third option that combines the best of both worlds: professional-grade AI transcription with the simplicity and privacy of local processing.

Why download Scrybapp instead of using built-in dictation?

Apple's built-in dictation feature on macOS has improved significantly over the years, but it still has fundamental limitations that make it unsuitable for serious voice typing work. Standard Apple dictation sends your audio to Apple's servers for processing, raising privacy concerns for sensitive content. Even the on-device dictation mode (available on Apple Silicon Macs) has a limited vocabulary, struggles with technical terminology, and does not support the level of accuracy that professionals need.

Scrybapp uses OpenAI's Whisper model, which was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio data. This gives it significantly better accuracy across a wider range of accents, speaking styles, and vocabulary domains. Whether you are dictating a medical report with specialized terminology, drafting a legal brief with precise language, or simply composing an email, Scrybapp's Whisper-powered transcription delivers results that built-in dictation cannot match.

Installing voice typing on macOS has never been easier

One of the most common frustrations with speech-to-text software is the installation process. Many tools require you to create accounts, configure cloud services, install browser extensions, or set up complex API integrations. Scrybapp eliminates all of this friction. The installation process is the same as any other Mac app: download, drag to Applications, open, and you are done. There is no account to create, no API key to configure, no cloud service to connect, and no browser extension to install. The AI model is bundled directly in the application, so everything you need is included in a single download.

Offline speech recognition for Mac professionals

For professionals who work in environments where internet connectivity is unreliable or restricted, having an offline speech-to-text solution is not just convenient but essential. Journalists working in the field, researchers in remote locations, military and government personnel in secure facilities, and travelers on long flights all need the ability to dictate without depending on an internet connection.

Scrybapp provides this capability without any compromise in quality. The Whisper AI model running on your Mac delivers the same transcription accuracy whether you are connected to high-speed fiber internet or sitting on an airplane with no connectivity at all. This reliability makes Scrybapp the preferred choice for Mac users who need consistent, high-quality voice typing regardless of their environment.

From download to productive in under a minute

We designed Scrybapp's onboarding to be as fast as possible because we respect your time. From clicking the download button to completing your first transcription, the entire process takes less than 60 seconds. There are no tutorials to watch, no setup wizards to navigate, and no configuration options to puzzle over. The defaults work great for the vast majority of users, and everything can be customized later if needed.

After installation, Scrybapp lives quietly in your menu bar, using minimal system resources until you activate it. It does not slow down your Mac, does not run background processes, and does not pop up notifications asking you to upgrade, rate the app, or complete a survey. It is simply a tool that does one thing exceptionally well: turning your voice into text.
